Mercari fees vs Poshmark start with different seller-fee rules: Mercari charges 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping for its current U.S. listing structure. Poshmark charges $2.95 on sales under $15 and 20% on sales of $15 or more. Mercari's lower headline percentage does not automatically mean a better sale. Buyer-paid shipping enters its seller-fee base, and shipping costs, discounts and the price a buyer will actually accept can change your profit.
This guide compares ordinary U.S. sales in USD using official policies checked October 17, 2026. It separates seller commission from buyer charges and uses illustrative shipping amounts, not carrier quotes. Poshmark also warns Texas sellers of an additional Seller Fee Tax; none of the baseline examples includes that tax. Check the final order preview for your location, listing and optional services before relying on an estimate.
Which has lower seller fees: Mercari or Poshmark?
At a $50 item price with $6 of buyer-paid shipping on Mercari, its seller fee is 10% of $56, or $5.60. Poshmark's fee on a $50 sale is $10 before any additional applicable tax or seller-funded discount. That is a $4.40 difference in baseline marketplace fees, not a $4.40 guarantee of extra profit. The shipping arrangements and actual selling prices still have to match the comparison you are making.
For low-priced items, Poshmark's flat fee takes a larger share of the sale: $2.95 on $10 is 29.5%. Mercari's fee on a $10 item with $6 buyer-paid shipping is $1.60. Conversely, unusually high buyer-paid shipping can erase Mercari's fee advantage. Above Poshmark's $15 threshold, the two headline seller fees are equal when Mercari buyer shipping equals the item price: 10% of twice the price equals 20% of the price. This is algebra for the stated baselines, not a recommended shipping strategy.
- Mercari seller fee: 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping.
- Poshmark seller fee below $15: $2.95.
- Poshmark seller fee at $15 or above: 20% of the sale.
- Buyer charges, seller-funded shipping and taxes on fees need separate treatment.
What enters each platform's fee base?
Mercari's official fee page expressly includes item price and buyer-paid shipping in the 10% selling-fee base. A $40 item plus $6 shipping therefore has a $46 base. Do not charge 10% only on the $40 item, and do not add buyer sales tax to the published base. Its current structure took effect January 6, 2025 for new and updated listings; the policy retains historical listing rules, so an old screenshot is not evidence of a current zero-seller-fee offer.
Poshmark's Fee Policy describes a deduction from the final order price and gives the under-$15 and $15-and-above tiers. Its help article confirms the exact $15 boundary. For ordinary single-item examples, this guide applies that tier to the item sale price and treats seller-funded shipping as a separate deduction. It does not import Mercari's shipping-inclusive base into Poshmark. For a bundle, discount, tax on seller fees or promotion, use Poshmark's actual earnings preview rather than extending the simple example. The calculators round monetary inputs and each seller fee to cents before subtracting costs. This is a planning assumption, not a platform-confirmed rounding rule; actual statements control.
Does Mercari's buyer fee reduce seller earnings?
Mercari separately charges buyers a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee on item price plus buyer-paid shipping for new and updated listings. Its fee page says no separate payment-processing fee applies to those listings. The 3.6% buyer fee is not another seller commission to subtract from payout. On a $50 item with $6 buyer shipping, it is $2.016, approximately $2.02 after rounding to cents, paid by the buyer.
That charge still matters to a pricing decision because the buyer sees a total checkout cost. Before sales tax, the illustrative Mercari checkout is about $58.02: $50 item, $6 shipping and $2.02 Buyer Protection. Seller revenue and payout do not include that buyer fee. This guide does not claim the buyer will accept the same item price on both platforms or that either marketplace will sell an item faster. Compare plausible offers and the checkout total separately.
How should buyer shipping and seller postage be recorded?
Buyer-paid shipping and your fulfillment expense are different numbers. For a Mercari example, record buyer shipping in revenue and in the 10% fee base, then subtract the actual label or postage expense once. If a prepaid label is withheld from the platform balance, this accounting convention is an economic reconciliation; the cash transferred by Mercari can already be net of that label. Do not subtract the label again after starting with a statement amount that already excludes it.
On Poshmark, buyer-paid standard shipping is not treated as seller revenue in these examples. Its Shipping Policy says Poshmark provides a prepaid label for a shipment up to 5 pounds, including packaging, and the seller must buy applicable upgrades or additional labels for heavier shipments under its rules. Enter any seller-funded shipping discount, upgrade and packaging cost separately. No fixed postage rate is assumed here. Mercari's page already displays future shipping tables effective October 19, 2026 alongside current tables, which is another reason to use the actual label quote instead of copying a number without its effective date.
Worked example: a $10 item with buyer-paid shipping
Assume a $10 Mercari item, $6 paid by the buyer for shipping, a $6 fulfillment expense, $3 inventory cost and $0.50 packaging. These are hypothetical costs. Mercari's selling fee is 10% of $16, or $1.60. Economic proceeds after the seller fee but before fulfillment are $14.40. Subtract $6 postage, $3 inventory and $0.50 packaging: estimated profit is $4.90. If the label was already withheld, the cash after fee and label would be $8.40 before inventory and packaging.
For a $10 Poshmark item, the $2.95 fee leaves $7.05 before seller costs. With $3 inventory and $0.50 packaging, no seller shipping discount, no label upgrade and no additional fee tax, estimated profit is $3.55. The $1.35 profit difference comes from the specified assumptions. A shipping discount or a different accepted price changes it. Neither payout figure should be called profit until the item's cost and seller expenses have been deducted.
Worked example: a $50 item and a shipping discount
Keep Mercari buyer shipping and postage at $6, but use a $50 item price, $15 inventory and $1 packaging. The seller-fee base is $56 and the 10% fee is $5.60. Economic proceeds after commission are $50.40; after $6 postage, $15 inventory and $1 packaging, estimated profit is $28.40. The optional buyer tax and Buyer Protection charge are not seller revenue in this calculation.
At Poshmark, the same $50 item has a $10 commission, leaving $40 before costs. Subtract $15 inventory and $1 packaging for $24 profit if the seller funds no shipping. If the seller instead pays a hypothetical $4 shipping discount, profit falls to $20. That discount is a seller expense, not an increase in Poshmark's 20% commission. These examples isolate cost effects; they do not establish equivalent delivery services, buyer demand or final cash-transfer timing.
What happens at exactly $15 on Poshmark?
Poshmark's current Fee Policy and help article agree: the 20% tier begins at $15, not above $15. At $14.99, the $2.95 flat commission leaves $12.04 before seller costs. At $15.00, the $3.00 commission leaves $12.00. A one-cent increase in sale price therefore reduces modeled earnings by four cents at the boundary. This small discontinuity matters when checking a minimum acceptable offer.
For comparison, a $15 Mercari item with $6 buyer shipping has a $2.10 seller fee. After that fee and the matching $6 postage expense, $12.90 remains before inventory and packaging. The $0.90 difference from Poshmark's $12.00 baseline is conditional on those shipping assumptions and excludes optional services and fee taxes. A target price should be checked against the full fee formula rather than treating Poshmark as a continuous 20% charge at every price.
What other costs can change the result?
Mercari's fee page lists $0 for a completed bank Direct Deposit, $2 for a failed deposit and $3 for a completed Instant Pay transfer. A withdrawal fee is per transfer, not automatically per item sold. If several sales fund one transfer, allocate its cost deliberately rather than deducting $3 from every order. The examples use no withdrawal charge. Authentication, shipping adjustments, cancellations or other services can add costs outside an ordinary completed sale.
Poshmark's current help article says sellers located in Texas have an additional Texas Seller Fee Tax deducted from earnings from October 1, 2025. This guide does not infer a tax rate or calculate it from the headline commission; use the amount in your account. Poshmark's Fee Policy also allows discounts and promotions to change. An order-specific deduction should stay visible in your own worksheet even when it is outside a calculator's baseline.
How do you choose using profit rather than percentages?
Write down a realistic accepted item price for each marketplace, not just the asking price. Then enter buyer-paid shipping where it belongs, the seller commission and the actual fulfillment cost. Subtract inventory and supplies, any seller-funded discount, and other applicable charges. For Mercari, the linked calculator models the 10% shipping-inclusive seller fee; it excludes buyer protection and optional withdrawal charges. Add any excluded seller expense to your comparison separately.
For the other side, open the Poshmark calculator in the related tools and check its result against the order preview, especially at $15 or when fee tax applies. Profit is the remaining dollar contribution after modeled direct costs, not take-home income after every business expense or income tax. A lower commission can be outweighed by a lower selling price or extra shipping cost. Keep both estimates, then reconcile a completed transaction with its statement. Marketplace Math is independent of Mercari and Poshmark.

Frequently asked questions
Is Mercari cheaper than Poshmark for sellers?
Often in a baseline comparison, but not always. Mercari charges 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping. Poshmark charges $2.95 below $15 or 20% at $15 and above. Actual selling price, seller-funded shipping, optional services and applicable fee tax can change profit.
Does Mercari still have no seller fees?
The current U.S. structure charges sellers 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping for new and updated listings, effective January 6, 2025. Mercari's policy retains older listing rules; check the actual listing rather than using a historical zero-fee screenshot.
Does Poshmark charge $2.95 at exactly $15?
No. Its current Fee Policy and help article put a $15 sale in the 20% tier, giving a $3.00 baseline seller commission. The $2.95 tier is for sales below $15.
Should Mercari's 3.6% buyer fee be subtracted from seller payout?
No. It is paid by the buyer on item price plus buyer-paid shipping for the current listing structure. Keep it separate from the 10% seller fee and from sales tax.
Are these calculators complete payout statements?
No. They estimate the displayed baseline fees and entered costs. Reconcile label withholding, withdrawals, seller discounts, fee tax and other account-specific adjustments with the actual transaction statement.
